Started as a record store in the UK in 1974, owner Martin Mills quickly developed Beggars into an indie label as a way to put out Lurkers material. A series of chart successes for The Lurkers fueled the releases of other highly successful artists such as Gary Numan/Tubeway Army and Colin Newman (Wire). By 1983, Beggars was releasing Bauhaus, The Associates, The Mighty Wah!, The Icicle Works, The Cult, The Go-Betweens, Love & Rockets, The Fall, The Charlatans, Buffalo Tom, Loop, and others. Currently, the label has one of the hottest catalogs around, and works with some of the most innovative and exciting talent of the day. In addition to the direct roster, associated labels include 4AD, Mo Wax, Play Louder, Rough Trade, Sulfur, Too Pure, Wiiija, and XL. All help make Beggars eclectic as well as innovative.

Mike Vernon, co-founder of Blue Horizon Records, was an innovator and focal point of the 1960's British blues invasion, which spawned John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac, Ten years After, and Savoy Brown. As a staff producer at Decca Records UK, he discovered and produced many of the aforementioned bands. When Peter Green, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood left John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Vernon put together Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac and Blue Horizon Records were born. Although it was only active for a few years, Blue Horizon left an indelible mark not only on blues, but on pop music as well. The label's current releases include re-issues of expanded editions of late '60s and early '70s recordings by Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Christine McVie, Duster Bennett, Mississippi Joe Callicut, Furry Lewis, Eddie Boyd, Otis Spann, Bukka White, Johnny Young, Johnny Shines, Curtis Jones, Champion Jack Dupree, and others. The label is also looking to sign and record new artists to help keep the blues alive.

Brassland

Brassland is an artist-operated label started in 2001 by writer Alec Hanley Bemis and twin brothers/musicians Aaron Dessner and Bryce Dessner, both best known from their work with The National. We encourage collaboration and creation among an evolving assortment of creative folks. We like music that transcends genre. Our catalog includes releases by The National, Nico Muhly, Buke and Gase, Jherek Bischoff, Doveman, People Get Ready, Clogs, and This is the Kit. We try not to make transcending genre a cliche by applying labels to what we do: funk-metal, progressive punk, Afro-Cuban jazz, underground hip-hop, intelligent dance music, whateva! We like musicians who play well and possess the elusive tonic of personality. Most of all we just like music.
